The more than 7,000 TV fans who picked their favorites in AOL's Emmy poll probably weren't thrilled Sunday night -- it turns out they overwhelmingly disagreed with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' actual picks. Out of 12 categories, fans correctly picked the winner in only three -- The Sopranos for Outstanding Drama, that show's Drea de Matteo for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama, and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy for Outstanding Reality Series.
Fans picked Sopranos patriarch James Gandolfini over The Practice's James Spader for Outstanding Actor in a Drama, and chose Alias' Jennifer Garner to win Outstanding Actress in a Drama over The West Wing's Allison Janney, who came in last place, with a mere 8 percent of the votes. In addition, they selected Steve Buscemi over his Sopranos castmate Michael Imperioli for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama.
If fans had their way, Sex and the City would have beat Arrested Development for Outstanding Comedy, and Friends' Matt LeBlanc would have trounced Frasier's Kelsey Grammer for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy. Proving that viewers love their dearly departed Friends, they also chose Jennifer Aniston over Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy. They like Will & Grace, too: By their vote, Sean Hayes would have bested Frasier's David Hyde Pierce for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy, and Megan Mullally would have beaten Sex's Cynthia Nixon for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
Finally, for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program, viewers preferred The Apprentice to the actual winner, The Amazing Race. But with their lousy prognostication record, The Donald would have had two words for them: You're fired.
